Winter wonderland

Got up this morning to a winter wonderland, well around six inches of the whites stuff. These was not much frost so it’s the nice powdery snow that is great for kids and those who have not grown up to have fun in. Normally at this hour I’m just walking to the morning breakfast meeting with the boys. Its been something of a tradition at this employer for the last two years. A number of years ago I was consulting a transport training company were they had problems with staff being late in the morning. As a lover of a cooked breakfast I was always in early to take advantage of the excellent one offered by the staff canteen. I noticed that nearly everybody got something when they came into work, it sort of goes with the territory. It occurred to me that if the canteen offered a free sit down breakfast from 8am until 8:30 would people come in early for the free meal. Management agreed to give it ago. Once news got around people came in, anything for a free breakfast. People sat around and talked a mixture of last nights television but also discussed work. The main advantage was that lateness was virtually eradicated within a week. It did cost the employer to provide the service and to cover the tax liability but all in all it was a success. Since the onset of diabetes and creeping high cholesterol with some of the guys (one of those things that starts hitting you in your late 30’s) breakfast is now more a whole-wheat bagel with Smoke Salmon that the traditional fry. Looking at the main road over the dijk this morning it looks as if the Dutch have never seen snow before so I have take the time to have a couple of cups of coffee and bacon/brown sauce sandwich.
